Coastal & shore protection

BONTRUP helps to protects coasts and shores against rising sea levels and heavier storms by providing a wide range of base and aggregate materials and rock armour grades for use in revetments, dikes, jetties and groynes.

The rock grades can be standard EN13383 light, coarse and heavy gradings, custom-made products or produced in accordance with other standards such as ASTM, BS, GOST, etc.

Our quarrying, engineering and logistical expertise allows an integral approach resulting in pragmatic solutions. We focus on the functional requirements to be achieved in the end and try to find the best match with available products and reliable logistical solutions.

For example, our Widegrade® material can be used as a stable granular filter between fine sand and larger armour rock, providing a simple and natural alternative for synthetic PP/PE geotextiles. It has high stability and can easily stand attacks by waves and reduce their impact on the coast.

With our international network of quarries, we can offer a wide range of material grades and types and provide the best solution for each application. For instance, due to their hardness and shape, granitic rocks are often used as large armour rock. Limestone aggregates are very suitable for use in concrete, whereas hard, dense limestone is also used in marine engineering providing a distinct appearance. Bremanger Bestone® has excellent strength and abrasion properties for use in nearly all civil and marine structures. In some occasions certain rock types (e.g., high density gabbro) may not be desirable, whereas in other applications it is a perfect match.

Breakwaters

BONTRUP enables the construction of artificial offshore structures to protect a port, anchorage location or marina from waves and currents. BONTRUP’s inhouse breakwater engineering expertise combined with its knowledge of aggregate and rock quarries and logistical know-how allow partners and clients to move away from traditional solutions, and consider BONTRUP’s suggested alternatives. Bontrup has developed Widegrade® as a stable and cost-efficient substitute for standard quarry run breakwater core material. Widegrade® has been tested extensively in both lab and field conditions and has been applied successfully in a number of large deep-sea breakwaters.

Limited access to natural rock sources often leads designers to prescribe concrete armour solutions for breakwaters. In many cases however, natural armour rock is the better and more sustainable solution, even when supplied from far away. Due to the efficient logistics and production and absence of cement, natural rock offers a low-carbon solution for breakwater construction.

BONTRUP can provide assistance in the design of breakwaters, using the latest insights and developments in breakwater engineering.

Scour protection

Offshore structures, such as wind turbines, deep sea pipelines, gravity-based structures (GBS) and more, need to be built on a stable foundation that is capable to withstand the powers of the sea. The supply of the right materials in these (often remote) locations is BONTRUP’s specialty.

Special offshore grades such as pipeline pre-lay or post-lay cover are supplied by large self-unloading carriers. This allows the ship-to-ship transfer of materials right at project site and provides a floating stockpile ensuring the continuity of the job.

Logistic Solutions

BONTRUP is home to marine and offshore supply chain experts providing simple logistic solutions to complex problems. A dedicated team is specialized in the global supply of rock products by bulk carriers. These experts can support design or re-design of projects to create the most efficient loading and unloading infrastructure, breakwater design and more. We use our own dedicated, world’s largest self-loading and unloading bulk carriers in the range of 35,000 up to 100,000 t DWT capacity. The delivery of many different types of rock product using these ships is possible – from aggregates to quarry stone larger than 10 tons per piece.
