Foundation PSA Emerald terminal at Antwerp

For the foundation of the PSA Emerald container terminal in the Port of Antwerp, Bontrup supplied over 140,000 tons of aggregates. This involved a special sub-base grading, originating from Bremanger Quarry. These aggregates (Bestone®) are characterized by their homogeneity, high hardness and strength. The grading was custom-made at Antwerp Stone Terminal and delivered to  site by inland barges.

Colas applied the crushed sub-base in a 25cm unbound layer, followed by a 20cm bound (CTB) layer. The continuous grading, together with the right moisture content make the material very easy to compact. Combined with the strength and angularity of Bestone®, this creates a hard, rigid foundation that achieves the required strength even with low cement contents.
