Asfalt Recycle Bedrijf

Circularity in asphalt

The Asfalt Recycle Bedrijf (ARB) owned by Bontrup and partners gives used asphalt a second life. Through a careful and controlled process, 'ZOAB' - open asphalt granulate is reprocessed into a high-quality, certified aggregates for use in new asphalt surface layers. In this way, ARB closes the loop on sustainable material use in Dutch road construction.

What is recycle granulate
In highway maintenance, asphalt top layers are milled. This so-called recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) consists of a mixture of aggregates, sand and bitumen. ARB takes the RAP material and recycles it through a carefully controlled process of crushing, screening and separation into recycle-granuliet in fractions ARB0/5, ARB5/8, ARB8/11 and ARB8/16 mm. The RAP arrives as waste, but leaves the site as a certified construction aggregate under BRL 2506, supplied with KOMO certificate and declaration of conformity.

Circular and future-proof
ARB recovers high-quality aggregates from recycled asphalt pavements (RAP) for re-use in new asphalt (wearing) course layers. To achieve this, it is important that only compliant, high-quality aggregates are used in asphalt course layers. In the Netherlands, this is the so-callled 'Steenslag 3'. Only then will RAP also remain of sufficient quality for high-quality reuse. ARB guarantees this quality through full traceability, separated material flows and continuous quality monitoring throughout the process.

"Sustainable reuse starts with controlled quality of the original aggregates."

Closing the loop
Research shows that a large proportion of secondary (recycled) aggregates can be used in new asphalt mixtures , without compromising strength or skid resistance. This results in significant footprint reductions compared to conventional mixtures. Through its asphalt recyling acitivites, ARB contributes direcxtly to the (Dutch) national circular infrastructure goals: less extraction of primary materials and prevention of waste through a closed material cycle in road construction.

Location and logistics
ARB is located in the western part of the Port of Amsterdam; strategically located for road and (inland) water transportation. The location offers ample storage and production capacity, enabling 24/7 delivery of RAP. Thanks to its own logistical capabilities, ARB can handle both the collection of RAP and the delivery of recycle-aggregates throughout the Netherlands, with Just-in-Time deliveries for every project.

"ARB - circular, fully certified and with consistent high quality. The basis for sustainable asphalt."
