Maasvlakte II is an extension of the port of Rotterdam where land has been reclaimed from the sea. A total of about 2,000 hectares of land has been achieved. BONTRUP was the main supplier of the stone for the hard section of the sea defence. In total, more than 5 million tons have been delivered in less than two years. The design is innovative, making the largest part of the hard section of the sea defence from relatively small stone: cobbles.
Together with the contractor (Boskalis-Van Oord), the optimum options in the quarry, logistics and design were sought at an early stage. The energy-neutral breakdown process at Bremanger Quarry, and being able to sail our own large, self-unloading bulk carriers (100,000 DWT) resulted in the most economical, reliable and sustainable solution for the delivery of the stone.
